Milestones of the Company's History

1953     

1953 The company L. Hauser KG is founded in Lörrach, Germany, on February 1, 1953. It sells the Tektor and Telstor level meters made by the British company Fielden Electronics.

1955 Georg H Endress begins developing his own measuring instruments. He registers his first patent with the Swiss Confederate Office for Intellectual Property.
1956

Launch of Nivotester and Silometer. The devices are produced in a former joiner's shop and surrounding buildings in Lörrach - jokingly named the 'United Shed Factory' by the employees.

 
1957

The young company is renamed Endress+Hauser GmbH. Sales exceed 1 million Deutsche Mark.

    

1959

The space-saving transistor technology replaces the old electric tubes.
1960 The first sales company abroad is established in Amersfoort in the Netherlands. Other national sales centers follow every successive year.

1961

 

The company and its 120 employees move to new premises in nearby Maulburg.
1965 Endress+Hauser presents the first flowmeter at the Interkama specialist trade fair.. 
1968 Mestra AG is established in Basel, Switzerland - the first holding structure for the Group which generates sales of 13.3 million Deutsche Mark. 
 1970

Endress+Hauser expands to America and Asia. A sales center opens in the United States. Shareholdings in the tank ganging specialists Sakura Instrument Co., Ltd., create a sales and
production platform in Japan.

 

Endress+Hauser moves into the PCB production business - the new subsidiary Photo Print Electronic GmbH (PPE) starts operations in Schopfheim, Germany.

 

The same year the Group achieves sales of 24.8 million Deutsche Mark.

1971

At the age of 76, Managing Director Ludwig Hauser retires.

 

Endress+Hauser starts to assemble instruments in the USA. 

1973 The company outgrows its "industrial puberty” (Georg H Endress) and gets a modern organizational structure.  
1974 The oil crisis brings the era of unbridled growth to a sudden end. Endress+Hauser gets into financial trouble. 74 of the 710 employees must be laid off - but most return to the company soon after.

A new production and sales center in Italy brings ultrasound technology to Endress+Hauser.
1975  Co-founder Ludwig Hauser dies at the age of 80. The Endress family is now sole partner.
1976 Endress+Hauser invests in new fields of activity. Measured value recording is added with the acquisition of the renowned Bavarian Wetzer company. 
1977

Conducta in Gerlingen near Stuttgart enlarges the range of products by liquid analysis technology.

Endress+Hauser Flowtec AG is founded in Reinach, Switzerland. The company specializes in flow technology.

 

Sales exceed 100 million Swiss Francs; the headcount rises to 1,085.

1980 Micro-processors emitting a continuous test signal allow the self-monitoring of the measurement points. The FTC681Z level meter and the Autozero flowmeter a year later set new standards. 
1982 With 1,714 employees, the Endress+Hauser Group generates sales of 184 million Swiss Francs.  
1983 Market launch of the Liquiphant. This level limit switch for liquids miniaturizes and perfects tuning fork technology.
1984 The era of digital communication in instrumentation begins with RackSyst products by Endress+Hauser.  
 1985

The Maulburg plant expands its activities to pressure measurement.

 

Launch of the m-point - the first Endress+Hauser flowmeter to use the Coriolis principle. The technique of the 'oscillating measuring tubes' heralds the successful move into mass flow measurement.

1990 The company exceeds sales of 535 million Swiss Francs. It now has 4,000 employees. 
1992 The first fieldbus measurement instruments are launched. The standard, co-developed by Endress+Hauser, allows the digital data transmission from the sensor to the control room. 
1994 Endress+Hauser begins manufacturing at its own company in China. Temperature measurement becomes an additional field of activity.
1995 Generation change at the top of Endress+Hauser: Klaus Endress is at the helm of the Group. 
1998

After a legal dispute, Endress+Hauser strengthens its patent protection activities. PatServe in Weil am Rhein is now in charge of looking after the Group's industrial property rights.

 

Sales exceed 1 billion Swiss Francs. 

1999

The business field expands. The new Reinach-based Endress+Hauser Process Solutions AG develops automation solutions.

 

A production facility for flowmeters opens in Aurangabad, India. 

2000 In the Millennium year, the headcount reaches 6,000.  
2001 The printed circuit board maker PPE fails in the market for mobile phones. Insolvency is unavoidable after years of substantial losses. The Group divests PPE.
2002 The Supervisory Board of the Endress+Hauser Group is constituted. It is headed by longtime Endress+Hauser Manager Klaus Riemenschneider.
2005

Endress+Hauser acquires Innovative Sensor Technology IST in Wattwil, Switzerland.

 

Launch of pH probes with Memosens technology. Equipped with a safe and simple plug-in connector, the units use induction for power supply and digital communication and can be pre-calibrated in the laboratory. 

2006 The Endress family of partners drafts its own charter.
